Crying

From 6 to 12 months

Crying is a means by which babies communicate their feelings. They cry when they are hungry or when they are wet or tired.

At this age, they discover new feelings that can make them cry.

What are these new feelings?

Between 6 and 12 months, your baby can cry to say, among other things:

« I am in pain  »   What can I do?
At this age, babies pierce their first tooth and most will experience a sharp pain. A baby who is piercing a tooth cries relentlessly, sometimes to the point where you don’t know what to do to sooth him. Hold your baby in your arms and cuddle him if he continues to cry. He needs reassurance. Ask your doctor; nurse of pharmacist how you can ease his pain.
« I am scared  » What can I do?
When your baby loses sight of you, he may think you are gone. He does not understand that you are in another room in the house. Your baby can experience a feeling of insecurity and feel he has been abandoned. Make sure that your baby can see you. If necessary, take him with you. He needs reassurance. Continue talking to him, tell him what your are doing.
Learning

You show your baby he can trust you by reassuring him when he cries or when he is in pain.

Teaching

When your baby cries:

Go to him as quickly as possible

He will not tire out because he cries.

He won’t cry as much.

He will understand that when you leave, you always come back.

Remain patient even if your baby continues to cry

He will be reassured, even though he does not stop crying.

He will feel your presence.

Give him reassurance when he is scared He will learn he can always trust you.
He will know he is important to you.

Playing

This is a song you can sing that could help put your baby to sleep. Don’t forget that your baby likes to hear your voice.

Rock-a-bye baby

Rock-a-bye baby, on the treetop,
When the wind blows, the cradle will rock,
When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall,
And down will come baby, cradle and all.

Sometimes, your baby may continue to cry even though you fed and changed him, made sure he was not too warm or too cold, held him, sang a song, rocked him and took him for a stroll. This can be difficult for a parent. In these moments, try this:
