Empathy

A baby doesn’t know others have feelings that could be different from his; he is unable to put himself in their shoes.

A child slowly understands that others have feelings by constantly expressing what he feels himself.

He learns to better understand and to respect the feeling of others when his own feelings are understood and respected.

Teaching

When your child is crying:

Try to understand what he is feeling.

When you try to understand his feelings, you show him his feelings are important to you and that you respect them even though they are different from your own feelings.

This will help him communicate what he feels and he will know he can rely on you.

Accept your child’s feelings even though he is disturbed or angry.

Practicing

To help your child understand what others feel:

Talk to him about the feelings of characters in a book or video.

Explain the meaning of some facial expressions: " Does this person look happy?", "Does this person look sad?".

Show him expressions of feelings using puppets and plush animals.

bored angry tired happy sad
